We're all too overloaded with information so here's some pretty pictures I made
Lets get out of our left brains for a minute
Huzzah! Another day and we’re still here!
This week I’ve written about finding creative joy when faced with creative setbacks.
Sometimes all it takes is a glue stick and scisssors.
Songpairing
*** I can remember when this song was synced in every MTV reality show. It sounds like playful scampering which we could all use more of in our lives. ***
I was inspired by this week to get out of my left brain and create something colorful and physical. She has been sharing a zine that she created to introduce the artist at the center of her music project, Riri, and:
1. it’s really cool
2. it’s a really great exercise in probing our inner artist’s depth
I started off this week receiving news of another setback regarding getting my album finally done, and after a brief emotional outburst of frustration and tears, I felt called to comb the craft aisles at Michaels.
I mean the least I can do is take my own advice, and ‘paint the watercolor bird.’
At the root of this, was a desire to further connect with, visualize and re-contextualize my inner artist.
I should disclaim that I was initially hesitant because arts and crafts and I have not, historically, been very compatible.1
I do love collages though, and have a collection of vintage and antique magazines dating back to 1890 that I was very careful to mostly maintain— only cutting here and there for something really fun.
So I got in the headspace of my songs. I got in the headspace of my sound and put these together.
And voila:2
Three collages containing the essence of my album and my artist, Caroline in the Garden, visually realized:
(10/10 recommend for anyone that has an inner artist or inner child that wants to play)
May this encourage you to get out your paints or your fabrics or your craft box and express what’s on your heart!
Thank you for your eyes!
In 5th grade, at a sleepover, we all brought old jeans to cut and puff paint into cute shorts and I mistakenly cut mine above the inseam so it turned into the teensiest, unwearable skirt. I was embarrassed and since then, have avoided crafts when possible.
I still need to add a fixitive on these but in case I ruin it doing that (because I’ve never done it before), I wanted to shoot the photos to preserve what it looked like when finished.
Caroline, three things:
1. Thank you so much for mentioning me! I’m amazed at the feedback loop of getting you inspired to put your creative self on paper this way 🌸
2. Your collages are beautifulll and super gentle
3. Please be patient with your record, I know how frustrating news like that are, I’ve had an album I’d been making for 5 years and that I now had to scrape and start recording anew - I can’t describe the agony of that. It’s ok to cry and to feel set back but you’re still moving forward with it 🖤
